According to new data coming to light this morning from trusted industry sources and their research, consumers plan to be very active on their smartphones and tablets this holiday season.

Why? The convenience and cost-effectiveness of shopping via mobile. And they’re beginning to shop as we speak.

In fact, 55% of consumers plan to begin their holiday shopping right after Halloween, says Tapjoy, a well-respected mobile ad network that recently polled users to better understand what role mobile will play in their holiday shopping excursions.

Not surprisingly, a commanding segment of mobile users (64%) plan to use their devices to research products and make purchases.

All told, 27% typically spend more than $50 on holiday gifts using their mobile device, while 40% would request more information about a holiday sale, product, or store after viewing an ad on their mobile device

Once again this year, games, clothes, tech, and travel are the top categories for mobile purchases.

So if you’re a retailer, small business owner, or a provider of advertising and marketing services to them, don’t forget mobile as you target consumers and their shopping lists this holiday season.

“With Halloween now in the rear view mirror, the holiday shopping season is officially underway,” observes Shikha Kaiwar, Tapjoy’s Northwest Media Planner. “Last year, mobile accounted for a fifth of holiday e-commerce sales. In 2013, that number is expected to further grow as consumers will be using their mobile devices in new ways as they approach the holidays to find the right products at the right price.”
