U.S. Smartphone Penetration Nearing 70 Percent

On Monday, comScore released the latest mobile industry data showing that domestic smartphone penetration is rapidly closing in on the next milestone threshold.

Reporting key trends in the U.S. smartphone industry for the three month period ending March 2014, 166 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (68.8 percent mobile market penetration).

That’s up 6 percent since December 2013.

Once again, Apple ranked as the top OEM with 41.4 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers. Samsung placed second with 27 percent market share (up 0.9 percentage points from December).

In third place was LG with 6.7 percent (up 0.1 percentage points). Motorola finished fourth with 6.4 percent and HTC rounded out the top five with 5.4 percent.

comScore also reported that Android ranked as the top smartphone platform in March with 52.2 percent market share (up 0.7 percentage points from December), followed by Apple with 41.4 percent, BlackBerry with 2.7 percent, Microsoft with 3.3 percent (up 0.2 percentage points) and Symbian with 0.2 percent.
