comScore - Two Out of Three Mobile Users Use SMS Consistently, One-Third Download AppsIn a new report published by comScore, mobile content habits and other wireless trends were analyzed using data from the firm’s “MobiLens” service.

The report ranked the leading mobile OEMs and smartphone OS platforms in the U.S. according to their share of current mobile subscribers, and reviewed the most popular activities and content accessed via the subscriber\’s primary mobile device.

The report found that 2 out of 3 U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device over a three-month period ending in July, up 1.4 percentage points versus the prior three month period, while browsers were used by 33.6 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers.  Those who used downloaded applications comprised 31.4 percent of the mobile audience, representing an increase of 1.6 percentage points from the previous period.  The number of users accessing social networking sites or blogs increased 1.9 percentage points as well, representing 21.8 percent of mobile subscribers.

In terms of OEMs, the report found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 23.1 percent market share, while RIM led among smartphone platforms with 39.9 percent market share.  Apple held the number two spot among smartphone platforms with 23.8 percent market share, with Google a close third at 17 percent.
