Basic Link BuildingThe topic of \”link building\” is set to appear frequently in future blog posts, since it\’s one of the most important factors in SEO. Today, we\’ll start with an outline of some basics.

Why links are important?

They tell search engines how valuable your resource is; the more sites are linking to you, the more valuable it really is. And if your page is competing against similar pages from other sites, inbound links help it to outrank those.

What\’s important in links?

Relevancy; strength (pagerank, authority of the page); and numbers – that is, how many sites link to yours. Also important is how exactly they link to your page – such as where the link is, for example, or if it is site-wide or just on one page.

Basic things you should know about link building:

The process of gaining links should go slowly and steadily. Thus your link-building campaign will gain trust by search engines.

It is obvious that you don\’t want a \”bad neighborhood\” of links – that is, links from sites with adult-, spam-, illegal-, or even pharmacy-related content. Unless, of course, your site is adult- or pharmacy-related.

Every link that leads to you should be unique. That means that the link \”anchor text\”, or the title of the link, should vary within each link you gain both externally (from other sites) and internally (from your own site).

If you exchange links with someone, it is better not to have just a reciprocal (two-way) link exchange, but to do something smarter, such as link from different pages or sites to each other.

Don\’t forget about the importance of your internal link structure. Internal links also matter. And gain links not just for your homepage, but also for other pages on your site when it makes more sense.

It is good to have different types of links – some from blogs, some from directories, some from other sites. And it\’s great if links are within the articles, among other links, or in footer.

Try to get permanent links rather than temporary ones. The age of the link also matters.

Every link you gain should be relevant to the content of your page, making it truly valuable. Otherwise it\’s much less important for search engines and for people.

Avoid paying for links. Or else pay to place your link where it would look very natural and where the linking page doesn\’t include words like \”sponsored links\” and \”advertisements.\” Google hates that.

Now that you know the link-building basics, you are probably hungry to find out how to get all those desired links. Stay tuned for more posts!
